Asus Zenfone 3 Review : Beauty and the Beast

Asus recently launched the new Smartphone in its Zenfone series, the Asus Zenfone 3. The company has launched two variant of Zenfone 3 with the price starting from Rupees 22,000 in India. Luckily I have managed to get my hands on the Asus Zenfone 3, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant. After two weeks of testing the device, I am writing down the Asus Zenfone 3 Review to give you guys some idea about the device. So let’s find out what Asus have managed to add to its latest Flagship. Also, I have mentioned pros and cons of the Zenfone 3 at the end of the review.

Design & Feel

As always let’s start with the look and feel of the device. After lots and lots of Asus Smartphone with same boring design, the company has managed to come up with the refreshing design. To be honest, the design of the Asus Zenfone 3 is its strength. The phone comes with the glossy back where you can find the fingerprint sensor, camera, LED Flash and the Laser Focus. There is a little camera bump which you should worry about when placing your phone down without any mobile case.

There are a volume button and power button placed on the right side and it has some texture on it for better feel. The phone comes with Type-C USB connectivity, don’t worry you still have the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top. The mono speaker and the microphone are placed at the bottom of the phone. Due to the glossy finish, the device is too slippery which is the only concern.

Asus Zenfone 3 Review - Display

One of the main highlights of the Asus Zenfone 3 is its display. The phone comes with the 5.2 inches Full HD Display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2.5D Contoured. Even the rear glass panel comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The 1080p HD display looks sharp and colors looks bright and vibrant. The viewing angles are great and there is no difficulty in viewing the display in the direct sunlight. Used the phone without any scratch guard for two weeks and I could not find any minute scratch till date. Sadly, the screen takes fingerprint smudges easily. The Zenfone 3 comes with LED notification light and has Screen color mode which you can adjust to your need.

The Asus Zenfone 3 comes with the 2.0 GHz 16 bit Qualcomm Snapdragon Octa-Core Processor and 3GB RAM. The multi-tasking was fast and there was no lag on the regular usage. Even with 15-20 Apps opened and kept running in the background, the phone continued to run smoothly. I felt a little bit of heat while multitasking hardly with 4G data kept ON. The gaming on the Asus Zenfone 3 was smooth and I enjoyed playing it. There was no issue even while playing some High-end games with high graphics settings. Thanks to the Adreno 506 GPU inside for enhancing the performance. Below I have attached the AnTuTu Benchmark score of the Asus Zenfone 3.

The 16MP rear camera on the Zenfone 3 with the Sony sensor has managed to capture some amazing shots. The rear camera comes with 4 Stops Optical Image Stabilization and 3-axis Electronic Image Stabilization feature. The camera interface in similar to other Asus devices loaded with many camera features. Some of the camera modes I used a lot are HDR Pro, Manual Mode, Super resolution, Low light, Time Lapse. The camera is capable of recording 4K videos as well. The focus was quick and thanks to the laser auto focus of the device. The 8MP rear camera does its job right and it managed to click some awesome selfies. Below I have attached some of the Camera samples of the Asus Zenfone 3 for your better understanding of the camera.

UI and OS

The Asus Zenfone 3 runs on the Android Marshmallow with Asus ZenUI 3.0 on the top. The UI is smooth and comes with lots of inbuilt features. The phones come with few bloatware Apps and sadly some cannot be uninstalled.

The Fingerprint on the rear side does not have too much of functionality. You can unlock the phone, attend calls and capture photos using it. The App cannot be unlock using the Fingerprint scanner. The Fingerprint scanner works really fast and I can able to unlock my phone in a just fraction of the second.

Connectivity and Storage

The phone comes with 32GB of storage out of which 8GB is reserved for the Operating System. The Asus Zenfone 3 comes with dual SIM hybrid slot with Micro and Nano SIM support. The device storage can be expanded up to 2TB using a Micro SD Card. The phone comes with 4G LTE support but I could not find any setting to enable the VoLTE feature though the feature was listed in Flipkart page. The call quality was good but I found little difficulty sometimes while on the call. The mono speaker on the bottom of the phone is good enough with a clear output. The box pack also comes with the premium earphone and the output of the earphone is really good.

Though the Zenfone 3 comes with 2650 mAh battery, the software is well optimized for a better life. The device comes with the Quick Charging feature which could charge your phone from 0-100% in just 2 hours. The battery lasted for a one whole day on a minimal usage without any issue. With WiFi or 4G ON and heavy usage, the battery lasted for 7-9 hours. Also, the phone comes with some power management settings which could help you while running out of the battery.

Asus Zenfone 3 Pros and Cons

Based on my usage of the device for few weeks, I have listed some of the advantages and disadvantages of the device.

Little overpriced

Too slippery

Final Verdict

Asus Zenfone 3 is the right choice if you are looking for the premium looking Smartphone at the midrange budget. There are only a few differences between the two variant of Zenfone 3 such as screen size, RAM, Storage and the battery Size. I personally like the 5.3 inches variant as I feel very comfortable to hold and use the device. That’s it for the Asus Zenfone 3 review, if you still have any doubts regarding this device please leave them in the comment below.
