Asus Zenfone Max 2016 Review | Much needed upgrade

Asus Zenfone Max which was launched last year in the ZenFestival was a huge hit in India because of its 5,000 mAh battery. Although it has a huge battery the phone does lack something to stand against its competitors. So this year the company has launched the new Asus Zenfone Max with Snapdragon 615 processor. The phone comes in 2 variant, one with 2GB RAM and another with 3GB RAM. The Asus Zenfone Max with 2GB RAM is priced at Rupees 9,999 and 3GB RAM is priced at Rupees 13,999. After the 2 weeks of usage, I am here with the review of Asus Zenfone Max 2016 edition. Let’s find out how good the upgraded version is!

Design & Build

There are no changes in terms of design or the build of the Smartphone from its previous version. The look and design remained the same with just a little hardware and software update. To the front, there is an earpiece, front camera and the three navigation buttons are placed at the bottom. Sadly the navigation buttons are not backlit enabled but you would get used to it. To the left there is nothing and to the right the volume buttons and the power button is placed.

To the rear side, the camera module with LED Flash and Laser Auto focus is placed at the top followed by the Asus logo. At the power of the rear ride, the single mono speaker is placed. The 3.5mm headphone jack is found at the top and the Micro-USB port at the bottom. The phone is surrounded by the metallic frame and the leather texture at the back make the phone comfortable to use.

Asus Zenfone Max 2016 Review - Display

The Asus Zenfone Max 2016 edition comes with the same 5.5 inches HD IPS display with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution. The display is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass. The viewing angles are good and there is no issue with the visibility of the screen in the sunlight. The Auto brightness mode does the perfect job here. There is also a Multicolor LED notification light at the top. There are few other useful options like One hand mode, Screen color mode etc. You can also unlock or lock your Zenfone Max by double tapping the display.

This is where the Zenfone Max has got upgraded from its previous version. The phone is powered by the 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Octa-Core processor with 2GB or 3GB RAM while the older version has the Snapdragon 410 processor. The internal storage of the 2016 edition is 32GB while the old 2015 variant has only 16GB of onboard storage. In terms of performance, the phone handles the multitasking very easily. But you need to clear the Apps in a regular time interval to get a smoother experience.

Asus Zenfone Max 2016 review - Performance

When it comes to gaming, the Asus Zenfone max 2016 does an average job. For a less intensive game like Temple run, Clash of Clans, Badland etc there are no problems and no heating issue as well. But when it comes to high-end gaming like Asphalt 8, NFS Most wanted, dead trigger there are few lags and frame drops. But you can keep the graphics settings to low or medium to make it playable. To the surprise, there are no heating observed for the high-end gaming as well. The volume output from the phone is pretty decent and clear as well.

The Asus Zenfone Max 2016 has the same 13MP rear camera and 5MP front facing camera. The rear has LED Flash and a Laser Auto Focus and comes with manual mode as well. The UI of the camera is pretty simple and easy to access. The 5MP front facing camera with Wide View F2.0 lens click great selfies. Here are the few camera samples from the Asus Zenfone Max for your better understanding.

I have posted more camera samples in Instagram. You can check it out here.

UI and OS

The Asus Zenfone Max 2016 edition runs on the latest Android Marshmallow 6.0 with ZenUI on the top. The UI feels so smooth as well and comes with a bunch of inbuilt features like App lock, kids mode, Hide Apps etc. You can also alter the size of an icon, text color, Font type and size.

Asus Zenfone max Review- Battery life

Same as the previous version, the Asus Zenfone Max Snapdragon 615 variant has the 5000 mAh battery. The battery is not user replaced but the back panel can be opened. The battery lasts for the two whole days on the single charge even on the heavy usage. If you are an average user then the battery should last for the 4 or 5 days. But sadly the phone does not come with the fast charging feature :\  The phone is the dual-SIM variant which supports 4G LTE and there is also an opening for the Micro SD Card for the expandable memory option.

Final verdict

That’s it pretty much for the Asus Zenfone Max 2016 review. The phone comes in  Black, White, Blue and orange color variant. If you are looking for a decent performance Smartphone with a great battery life and an awesome camera then the Asus Zenfone Max is the right choice.
