Asus Zenfone Zoom Review – A good daily driver, not a DSLR replacement

The Asus Zenfone Zoom is the upgraded version of Asus Zenfone 2 with some changes in its design and camera segment. The company claims it to be the thinnest Android Smartphone with 3x Optical zoom. I having been using the Asus Zenfone Zoom for past few weeks and in this post, I am going to share my experience and thoughts about it. So here is the Asus Zenfone Zoom review and let’s find out whether it worth the price we pay.

Look and Feel

The design and the feel of the Asus Zenfone Zoom are better when compared to its previous models. The volume rockers on the rear side have been taken back to its original position and finally the Zenfone has got the metal frame all around. On the front, we have the 5MP front camera, Earpiece, sensors on the top followed by the 5.5-inch 1080p display. Just below the screen, the three navigation buttons are placed which are not backlit enabled. To the right-hand side, there is a Volume button, Power button and a dedicated camera and video button to access the camera at ease.

To the rear side, we have the 13MP rear camera with the optical zoom bump and the laser autofocus. Just near the camera, the secondary noise cancelation mic is placed.  The Asus branding is printed on the bottom of the rear side. The back panel feels like a leather but actually made out of plastic with some gesture. The gesture on the back panel makes it comfortable to hold. The rear panel can be removed and underneath it, the two Micro SIM slot, SD Card Slot and the non removable battery is found. Inside the box pack of the Asus Zenfone Zoom, we also have the camera strap which you can attach to your phone.

Display

Talking about the display, the Asus Zenfone Zoom has the 5.5-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 Pixels resolution. The display is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on the top. The display looks quite well and the viewing angles are great as well. Even in the sunlight, there is no trouble in using the Zenfone Zoom. The phone does have some of the display modes which we can choose according to our need. If you find difficult to operate the phone with single hand then you can also opt for One hand operation mode. Watching videos and movies on the Asus Zenfone Zoom is the absolute pleasure and the box pack contains the In-ear type earphones as well.

Performance

Before talking about the actual performance of the phone, let’s talk about the Specs of the phone. The Asus Zenfone max is powered by the 2.5 GHz Intel Atom Z3590 Quad Core processor and 4GB of RAM. It has Gfx 6 Series GPU to enhance the gaming performance. Now talking about the actual performance, the Zenfone Zoom stands top. Multitasking and switching between the Apps were smooth without any lags and delayed response.

Asus Zenfone Zoom Review - Gaming performance

The gaming on the Asus Zenfone Zoom was the pure bliss! Almost every High-end games played well without any issue. Even at the High graphics settings, no lags and frame drops were observed, Thanks to Intel processor and 4GB RAM. The Call quality was good enough and the speaker on the phone was loud and clear.

Camera

The camera is the main centric of the Asus Zenfone Zoom. It has 13MP rear camera with 3X optical Zoom and HOYA Lens Technology. The camera performed really well in the daylight but surely not a substitute for your DSLR. The 3X optical lens allows you to capture the object at the great distance but you can also switch to the digital zoom in the settings. But the camera performance of the phone at the low light was a little disappointment. The Asus Zenfone Zoom camera has many modes like Slow motion camera, Panorama, Timelapse etc and you can also opt for the manual mode if you are an expert. Here are the few camera samples of Asus Zenfone Zoom.

Being the camera-centric Smartphone, the Asus Zenfone Zoom does not have the 4K video recording. The camera can shoot up to 1080p videos and has Optical Image Stabilization as well. Let us not forget to mention the 5MP front-facing selfie camera. As usual, the front camera of the Zenfone Zoom managed to capture some awesome selfies similar to other Zenfones. Overall the Asus Zenfone Zoom has tried to produce DSLR  quality on a Smartphone but not fully succeeded. I hope Asus will keep trying something innovative like this instead of Megapixels race.

Storage

There is nothing to talk about the storage of the Asus Zenfone Zoom. The Company has given the maximum storage option so that you can never run out of the memory. The Zenfone Zoom has 128GB of external storage and it also has expandable Micro SD Card support as well. I wish Asus should have also launched 32 GB and 64GB of Zenfone Zoom as well and priced it around 25,000 and 30,000.

UI & OS

The Asus Zenfone Zoom runs on the Android Lollipop 5.0 with the Zen UI on the top. As usual, the phone is loaded with lots of bloatware but few of the can be uninstalled. There is no difference in terms to UI for the Low-end Asus Smartphone and a high-end Asus Smartphone. Anyhow the OS comes with some of the preinstalled features like App lock, Hide Apps, Easy mode, Child mode and many. However there are no issues with the OS and Asus should try to push the Android M update as soon as possible.

Battery

Asus Zenfone Zoom Review - Battery

The Asus Zenfone Zoom is packed with 3,000 mAh battery which is sealed inside the phone. The phone has the ASUS BoostMaster technology and within the box package, the fast charger is provided. The BoostMaster technology allows you to charge your phone from 0 to 100% within 2 hours which is good. The battery on the Zenfone Zoom lasts for one full day on the average use and can withstand up to 8-10 hours on the heavy usage. The phone also has some battery saving mode by default. The battery saving modes are not just for the sake but it actually works.

Final Verdict

Considering the price of Rupees 37,999, the Asus Zenfone Zoom is quite a good choice if you are looking for a device with the great performance and handy camera. Again I am repeating that you can capture some awesome shots if you can play with manual mode but surely it cannot be the replacement for your DSLR. The Asus Zenfone Zoom is exclusively available via Flipkart and if you are planning to buy one you the affiliate link give above, that would help the blog running. If you have anything to say about the device please leave them in the comment section below and you can also share it on Social medias if you liked the review.
