I am using Moto E for the past 8 months and its one of the best budget phone. Before 6 months, Moto E got the Android KitKat 4.4.4 OTA update. After few months of use on Android KitKat 4.4.4 I have started facing some minor problem. But at the last ended with a major problem that is Moto E is getting restarted automatically by itself. At first it restarted automatically like once a day and it randomly increased. Also, I have contacted the customer service about the problem and they said to follow some instructions. They asked to factory reset the phone but still the problem continued. But I have found the phone is resting whenever I use the power button on Moto E.Sometimes when I lock the mobile or when I try to take the screenshot the phone gets restarted. But it doesn’t happen every time only few time while using the Power button. At last found, that it is a software issue with Motorola Moto E running Android KitKat 4.4.4.

I am also facing this problem but still finding the solution….
This could solve your problem temporarily
I too face the same problem. Now a days it is more frequent. When i lock or unlock the phone it reatarts.
For temporary fix use this method. For permanent solution wait for Lollipop udpate.
Will Lollipop Update,Fix This Problem Permanently ????
No, the lollipop update didn’t fix this problem. This problem is related to the mother board.
When is the Lollipop update expected for Moto E?
I got updated to Android 5.0.2 (soak), the issue is still there! And, some users took it to the service centre and got it fixed! They mentioned it was some issue with the motherboard! I’m thinking about taking it to the service centre or should I go with cyanogen mod 12?
If possible take it service centre and revert here if it gets fixed:)
I’m using Cm 12. Issue of same.
Its a hardware problem I have sent my phone to service centre. I tried all software tweeks possible but nothing resolved the issue. Take it to the service centre immediately without wasting your warranty!
A good way to turn the screen off in lollipop is to get the “Screen Off” app from the play store, once installed, long press the little circle at the bottom of the screen and it will give the option to use that app…tap “always” and you’ll be good to go. As far as turning on, my screen wakes up when I move my phone Or….. Set your camera to turn on by twisting your phone then just close it. I didn’t really like the tap tap tap method my proximity sensor wasn’t jiving with the app. Hope this helps!
Thanks for this information bro 🙂
Sorry to inform all. This is not the issue with OS.and it cant be solved with any os upgrades….and the total mother board should be replaced to fix this issue and this is not come under warranty….So guys go with this 3rd party apps only…
Just get a replacement phone right from Motorola
It is indeed covered under warranty if its within the valid period of one year from purchase date. Many people got it fixed under warranty without paying a penny!
Yes if your phone is still under warranty then you can fix it by taking to service centers.
I just got replaced the mother board from service center, after a few month again same issue started coming. Now warranty of a mobile is also over. Don’t know what to do.
Yesterday I spoke to Moto E Service person he gave the following solution. It worked for me.
With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.
The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS
Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select
Tip: If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.
The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)
Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key
Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and Vol Down key, and start the process again.
The device will display additional menu options (Text will appear in BLUE)
Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option
The device will then perform the partition wipe
The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence
Wow! bro, this steps seem a bit complex to me. Upload a video on YouTube and share the link over here if you can, please.
I guess this is resetting the phone. Correct me if im wrong, since id installed the soak update, had more issues, reboot issue persisted, and the wait was longer. Now om thinking kk is much better.
its a very complex procedure. still tried it but it didn’t really seem to solve the problem at hand.
I’ve done this just now .. but not sure it has wiped all cache partition. coz the moment I touched the power button it just restarted within 2 seconds .. I’ll update the info regarding this after 2 days coz i hv to check whether it works or not…
Thanks for the info 🙂
Hey thanks srinivas, the procedure worked for me. guys, everyone, follow the procedure given by srinivas. it solved the restarting issue in my moto e
Thanks Bro, It is working 🙂
Glad it helped you 🙂
Hi Friends,
Just followed the steps mentioned by Srinivas……..Will see for some days and see if the issue gets fixed….. Will update you.
The best way to solve the issue is to install Volume Unlock Power Button Fix from googleplay and start using volume key as the wake up key. This is an issue with PCB unless and until you replace the PCB it remains as the problem. But in my case, I got my MOTO E serviced from he authorized service centre , still the rebooting issue remains. But searching on internet I found this fix. try. Be happy …
You really made our readers happy 😉
This solution is not working for me.
I tried installing this tap tap app. I lock it using the tap widget and unlock it within five seconds using the sensor. This is the only situation in which it works. If i unlock it after 10 seconds or say 1 minute, the sensor doesn’t really respond and i am back to the same problem.
Its works like a charm here 🙂 just practise it for some times
Hey!my phone’s warranty expired 2 months ago and I am started facing this problem a month ago what should I do ?
Of course, sadly you have to spend your own money to get it fixed.
my fone MOTO E is gettng restrd again md again and i i didnt recive any lolipop update till nw …plzz giv some solutions
use Gravity screen app download form play store ….and enjoy….solve all problems related to frequent restart of Moto E.
There is this application called gravity screen (look it up in the play store). This application uses your phone’s proximity sensor and gyroscope to lock and unlock your device, without the need to press the power button.
It is amazingly fast and useful with many options.
You must have a look at it too. Everyone must download it to look after the restart problem.

Also btw, the lollipop update has not helped at all. And many moto e users have this problem. You can see this at the Motorola forums page.
Go and search for the page on Motorola forums page, as although I myself am a moto e user, I don’t have the link.
Add for you Mohammad, the update had to be looked up to from the software update in about device. If you haven’t received the update wait add there are over a million moto e users in India itself.
I am facing the same problem for the last few weeks… I don’t know if there is not compatibility between L update n hard wear of moto e , why they released L update for it.
Hello Vijay,
You have shared a great idea for Moto E users. I am also using Moto E last 1 year and I was also facing this same problem of automatic restart while press the power button, then I had gone at services center and they added new mother board in my cell phone, after I have checked, but the problem was doing same as restart before but now I have installed Tap Tap APP, so now will it restart automatic????
I recommend using the GravityScreen App. Truly works like a charm, the phone will automatically lock, when you put it down/into your pocket and turn on, when you pick it up.
The issue still persists on custom ROMs, so it’s probably a hardware malfunction.
Hi,
