What is an eSIM? this is the most asked question after the launch of the new Apple iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Although this technology was there for a long time now, it is creating lots of buzzes as the latest iPhone has it. So what is an eSIM actually mean? eSIM basically means Embedded SIM which allows the user to activate the cellular plan of the specific carrier without the actual physical SIM card. All you need to do is just connect your eSIM with your carrier account and start using it. With this method, the change of carrier is hassle free and more convenient. As of now, only a few carriers support eSIM and in India, it is said that Airtel and Jio will start the eSIM service very soon. iPhone XS and XS MAX is not the first device to carry eSIM, the Apple watch and the Google Pixel 2 already has the eSIM.

  • First and the foremost advantage of the eSIM is that you don’t need any physical SIM Card. It is a small chip embedded inside your smartphone which may help the manufacturer to build better-looking Smartphones.
  • Activating and switching between the carrier is easy. You don’t need to go to the shop to get the SIM and wait for it to get activated. All you need to do is login into your carrier account and link to your eSIM.
  • In the case of your phone theft, the eSIM cannot be taken out and using the phone with another SIM. So there is a high chance of tracking your phone and getting it back.


  • Since it is not a physical SIM, it is impossible to take off the SIM and put it on another Smartphone in case the phone runs out of battery or if the phone breaks.
  • Since this technology is just emerging there is not a lot of carriers which support eSIM but it will increase eventually.
